Cleaning up marine dirt on ships can be a major task for ship operators. The biological pollutants attached to the ship's hull increase flow resistance, and as a result, increase the fuel consumption and pollutant gas emissions of the entire ship. For example, the deposition of mussels and algae on the ship's hull not only increases fuel consumption, but also threatens the ecosystem.
Nowadays, a laser process has been developed to clean the hull.
Biological pollution is caused by the growth of algae, mussels, and other marine organisms on the ship's hull. Dirt increases fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by increasing the flow resistance of ships. If traditional mechanical cleaning methods are used to treat them, it will damage the hull coating. In addition, if you do not want organisms or even some of the hull coating to enter the water, you must extract the dirt.
Ecological friendly laser underwater cleaning
Laser radiation can be used to destroy underwater marine dirt without damaging the bottom coating of the ship. Scientists have developed a program that uses laser radiation to destroy the cells of dirt, causing it to die and then be washed away by water after a period of time.
Researchers conducted an investigation at the southern port of Helgoland Island. There, they irradiate the dirt sample with a laser, then send it back to the North Sea and inspect it two to four weeks later. Dr. Benjamin Emde, an underwater technology expert, said, "We are able to achieve significant and delayed cleaning effects. By simulating ocean currents, the cleaning effect is further enhanced, just like the addition of moving ships in real life
Reduce emissions and avoid species displacement
Biopollution not only increases fuel consumption and carbon emissions, but also can lead to the introduction and spread of non native species in foreign ecosystems. Emde stated that "species displacement is the main risk of biological pollution." If ships introduce foreign organisms into the ecosystem through hull fouling, it can seriously damage the ecosystem. So in reality, this has led to ships being prohibited from stopping at foreign ports. Therefore, laser cleaning can effectively replace mechanical cleaning methods. During the laser cleaning process, the organisms brought in by the ship are fatally damaged, so it will no longer pose a danger to the ecosystem.
